Paper Pusher

Gramma Sal passed pages across the bar, delicate-like so as not to disturb Barry.  She knew well enough that quick movements were apt to spook him.  She knew this was his sole reason for making his way to the Fallon House this morning, farewells and final assignments masking his mission.  Fancy, crisp pages with fancy wrting trumped by even fancier words.  In triplicate no less.

Barry felt no need to wade through the legal mumbo-jumbo: he knew exactly what he was getting into, and out of.  Less a deal with the Devil than a part with the past, there would be no better day than today to sign his life away.  Breaking free from the prison in which his family plot had housed him would loose the chains of ghosts that long haunted him.

Gramma Sal kept her watchful gaze upon him.  Expectant, yes, but with the careful consideration of a finely chosen hat.  Well worn, and sturdy, and the right hat for the right job.  Gramma Sal wore plenty of them as school matron.  She could not have gotten this far in life without her particular sense of style.

And Barry knew her intent was on the up-and-up, had known it would be, even before he brought the prospecting to her attentions.  She was up-and-front with him as well.  Fast friends with his mother and father, Gramma Sal had nothing up utmost respect for them, and the resourcefulness to achieve their ideals. Mentoring their only child had already seen to that.  Her further tutelage would benefit them all for future generations.

Epic Beards of Review: Time Warp #1 (One Shot) and more!

So, I've been told I should update my blog more often.  Here are a few reasons why:

  • Fellow bloggers over at Charlie the Cavalier and The Epoch Life have been wondering where the new stuff is.  Point taken.  I've been traveling abroad in Germany as well as teaching Upward Bound and still holding down the managerial duties here at the coffee shop.  Not to mention some top-secret Traveling Tales projects coming up, there's reasons, but they're more like excuses.
  • I was awarded "Blog of the Week" over at NEPA Blogs the week of July 16.  My brother was quick to point out that I really couldn't be awarded with such awesome because I hadn't updated my blog in over two months, and therfore the point was moot.  Lisa over at "Charlie" was kind enough to mention that they film their segments months in advance.  Brother feud is a tie, but he can't even grow a beard.
  • I wrote a pretty fun review of Time Warp #1 over at my new friends at Strip Tease.  Not nearly as scathing as it sounds, but a nice review site for comics.  Here's my review.

  • I've also been given tons of free books from my friends over at Angry Robot Books!  I've finished sf/spy thriller The Lives of Tao by Wesley Chu, detective novel Cambodian Book of the Dead by Tom Vater and am barreling through the fantasy Seven Forges by James A. Moore.  All SOLID selections, but I've gotten to where I don't expect anything less from them!
Other than that, there's plenty going on here at the Beard, so don't fret, beardlets!  More to come soon!

Future Imperfect

I'm writing this in hopes that somehow, some way, this will get back to you, though I'm not sure what you'd do with it once you had it.  I'm unsure of what to do with it myself--so convoluted, so unbelievably--dammit, why can't I think?!

I know I really can't change anything that's already happened, the past, but...this is my last chance coming back here.  Now that I'm out of...well, time.

Heh.  Heh heh heh.  Boy, that shouldn't be nearly as funny as it is right now.  Heh, now.  Whoowee!  It just doesn't get old.

Okay,
I'll stop now.

Bearded Ballads 30/30: Killjoy

You are a facebook status:

hope, beyond
hope
someone will understand
how it is you feel
how it feels to be you
looking for someone
to open up a dialog
to comment
or to even like the thing.
Please,
troll my page.
Cryptic, inane
small creatures
all a clumping mass
can’t make no bones about it
hide nor hair of
an owl pellet bolus.

You are a facebook status:

Spread your wings,
make like Ben Franklin and go fly a kite.
“Shoot for the moon because even if you miss you’ll still land among the stars.”
Ben always said.
Yes, but you’ll also
be hurtling
through the cold,
lifeless reaches
of space
because he also said
“Don’t believe everything you read on the internet.”

You are a facebook status:

song, being sung
just the right line
makes it yours
because you feel it
in the music
and it speaks to you.
Yet, like a child,
you can’t.
All the life
has been bleached
from your bones
creativity picked clean
and your tombstone says it all:

There lies so-and-so.
They took what they knew
but they didn’t even know themselves

Bearded Ballads 29/30: Out with the Old

Someone else’s notepad
yellow, but browning
forgotten ‘neath
dust of ages
thrust upon a shelf.
Plotting out poems
having been lonely
too long, still,
unsure,
forced out
to fend for themselves.
This is all the time they have left.
Haunted
in their emptiness
in their words too much to bear
if only
they hadn’t been left behind.

Bearded Ballads 28/30: Crosswalk

Morning fog
yet
to have burned off,
but here comes the sun.
Head swims
through the thickness
as I’m hailed
name called
over and again
if that’s me
backwards, along
soupy grooves.
Barefoot
across the street
not looking both ways
ever inward.
Dangerous
in the darkness of the day.
I see, if only too late
this song
isn’t about you.
No, I’m full
eating blackbird tonite.
Shouldn’t have had that
second slice
of humble pie.

Bearded Ballads 27/30: Dirty Dishes

Washing machine
background music
stanzas set
to pots and pans
for the cleanest
tune.  Lulling
me to sleep
through its
cyclical convulsions.
